Dementia care

Living well with dementia

Watching a family member experience the changes brought on by dementia or Alzheimer's disease is a profoundly emotional journey. When the time comes that their care needs require specialised, around-the-clock support, finding an environment that offers both high-level security and genuine warmth is everything.

At The Willows, dementia care is shaped around what helps a person feel safe: calm surroundings, gentle routines, and familiar people who understand them. We provide dedicated, specialised dementia care that prioritises the safety, identity and comfort of our residents. We focus not on what has been lost to the condition, but on celebrating who the person is today, ensuring they live a life filled with purpose, connection and respect.

Our approach to dementia care

Our dementia care is a gentle, reassuring way of looking after people living with dementia. It is a careful balance of clinical skill, thoughtful surroundings and emotional intuition. Rather than rush or correct, our team meets each resident where they are, with patience and warmth, easing distress and protecting dignity. Understanding their past helps us connect with them in the present, allowing us to ease frustration and celebrate personal milestones. In a home this small, that kind of unhurried, person-centred care is possible day in and day out. Our specialised approach includes:

  • Person-centred care plans. Every resident's history, career, hobbies and family life are woven into their daily care.
  • A secure and familiar environment. Our dedicated spaces are designed to minimise confusion and anxiety while promoting safe independence. Secure perimeters and clear, familiar layouts allow residents to move freely and safely.
  • Dementia-specific lifestyle programs. We offer tailored cognitive and sensory activities designed to stimulate memory, maintain motor skills and bring joy. This includes music memory programs, gentle art therapy, reminiscent discussions and sensory garden activities.
  • Adaptive dining experiences. Mealtime can sometimes become overwhelming for those living with dementia. Our kitchen and care teams provide specialised nutritional support, including texture-modified meals and easy-to-manage finger food options, served in a calm, unhurried dining environment.
  • Regular staff training and clinical excellence. Our registered nurses and care staff undergo regular, specialised training in the latest evidence-based dementia care practices. We emphasise gentle communication, behavioural support and validating techniques.

Why small helps

For someone living with dementia, familiarity is everything. With just forty beds and a long-serving team, the faces around your loved one stay the same, the surroundings stay calm and knowable, and a registered nurse is always on hand. We know that consistency is key for individuals living with dementia. By maintaining stable, dedicated care teams, our residents see the same familiar faces every day. This consistency builds deep trust, reduces anxiety, and creates a peaceful, predictable rhythm to daily life. Less noise, less change, and more of the quiet reassurance that helps people feel settled.

Moments of joy. Visits from family pets, familiar music, and art and craft sessions can reach people in ways that words sometimes cannot. Spending time in nature and fresh air is wonderful, and our secure garden and outdoor courtyard offer a sensory haven where residents can access a safe, tranquil outdoor space.

Total family support

Dementia impacts the entire family. We place an immense priority on supporting you through this transition, offering open communication, educational resources, and a sympathetic ear whenever you need it.

Walking it through with you

Transitioning a loved one into specialised dementia care is a significant step, and ensuring the environment is the right fit for their specific behavioural and clinical needs is essential. Our leadership team is here to answer your questions with absolute transparency and guide you through the clinical assessment process. Every person living with dementia is different, so the best place to start is a conversation. Come in, meet the team, and tell us about your loved one. We will be honest about what we can offer and help you create a safe, joyful home for your loved one, and understand the care and funding pathway.
